Jim Hollis and Harvey Almarode are back with a fun Christmas Holiday SMART Board podcast. Jim and Harvey discuss and share their favorite Christmas flash file to make the students laugh. The flash files can be downloaded from the podcast website and inserted into Notebook. Harvey shares his Twelve Brats of Christmas Notebook application that challenges students to match up the right Christmas gift with each of the 12 brats. Not to be outdone, Jim shares his collection of Holiday Word Search puzzles that he's made from teacher requests. Finally, Jim and Harvey discuss how to instantly grab the students' attention from the very beginning of a lesson presented in Notebook.

These three links will allow you to play the flash file. However, if you wish to download the file, you can right-click and select "Save File As..."
Notebook Application Files
The Holiday Word Search Puzzles will take you to the Teachers Love SMART Boards Christmas Holiday Resource Page. Scroll down the page until you find the Notebook files.
Miscellaneous
Notebook File Downloads: If you experience problems opening the Notebook files, make sure you Save the file instead of Opening the file. If the file extension gets changed to <.zip> after you save the file, rename the file so the extension is <.notebook> and you should then be able to open the file using Smart Notebook. Switching to the Firefox browser may also help.
Hi Noreen,
do you know what the correct MIME type is for SMART Notebook files? I'm having this problem too.
Cheers,
Pete

Yea Harvey! I couldn't believe it when Harvey started talking about the cover pages being all about the standards and teacher objectives. Whenever I view lessons I always have to get to the 2nd or 3rd page before I am really able to preview it. I do not have time to read all of the teacher notes and objectives when looking for a lesson that I can use. The first page past the cover page is what usually grabs my attention. If it is good I take a second look. If not, I don’t waste my time. We were given a district cover page template to use whenever we make a new lesson. The good thing about it is it makes you think about how worthwhile your lesson really is. However, I think that I will start putting the "cover page" at the end of my lessons. I can always link them to the new attention grabbing first page. Love your podcasts!

Hi Noreen,
Thank you so much for your comment. The problem is indeed related to the MIME setting. However, this isn't something that's easily fixed by the home user and it gets very low attention at the IT department. I'm also trying to get as many people over to Firefox browser as possible. I absolutely hat IE. :o)

Please consider providing the the answer or additional hints for the Twelve Brats of Christmas. I am feeling very challenged since I don't even know where to begin.. This happens more than I would like to admit. Thanks!

The problem you have with Internet Explorer downloading Notebook files as zipped files may be able to be fixed. My students were having the same problem at the beginning of the year getting the correct format for my SMART notes if they used Internet Explorer. (Personally I prefer to use Firefox, too, but a lot of my students don't have it.) It turned out that the server didn't have the correct mapping for the MIME type for SMART Notebook files, so it did the default...pushed it out as a zipped "text" file. I contacted our IT person and it ended up being a simple two-minute fix on the server. It may be worth it to contact the administrator of the site and see if they can add the MIME type for SMART Notebook files.
Thanks for the fun resources for Christmas!
